On July 14, 1938 Howard Hughes and a crew of four, broke the world record for flying around the world after completing the 14,672 mile flight in 3 days, 19 hours, and 14 minutes. In a dramatic account of this flight, through the eyes of Lt. Thomas L. Thurlow (navigator and co-pilot), you will hear how the events unfolded as never before. Candid and at times humourous, this text is exactly as he wrote it in his diary written soon after the flight was completed.

The story is as initially written and captures the viewpoint of an accomplished navigator.
From an aviators perspective, I was surprised that Hughes did not use quarter flap for max gross weight takeoff.
No flap at Floyd Bennett resulted in taxi into the rough to maximize runway length and damage to the tail wheel assembly.
During the Russia segment, flap was used and the aircraft was airborne without anxiety on the part of Thurlow.
Reminds of Earhart's L10 accident Ford Island, March 1937 when a tire failed on takeoff from a rough grass field max gross.
She used maximum runway at Lae, New Guinea, 2 July 1938 just getting airborne at the end. No flap setting information in flight accounts.
Col. Thurlow died in an aircraft accident 23 June 1944.
The newspaper report is in roots web ancestry.
An aircraft accident report is available at Accident Reports.

Flying with Howard Hughes eBook Col Thomas Thurlow Tamara Field Reviews

Story could have been told on one page. The flight had some historical significance, but even that is lost. The most interesting part of the story was how one of the otherwise "dead" engines was started.
Granddaughter to the late First Lt. Thomas Thurlow honors her grandfather by publishing his private journal about his amazing journey with Howard Hughes. This beautiful tribute is engaging with detailed entires that make you feel like you are with them all along on this history making flight! Thank you for preserving such a great piece of Americana by sharing this journal with the world!

I highly recommend this book if you want insight into a not often discussed event that helped pave the way for air travel as we now know it!
